Sean McCarthy

B.A. (Hons) Psychology, MPhil, MSc, Dip Clin Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.

Sean is a fully qualified Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist He completed his MSc in the Department of Psychiatry in Trinity Medical School and holds full membership with the Irish Council for Psychotherapy and the Irish Forum for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. He is a registered Training Analyst with the Irish Institute for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, where he is the current director of training. He lectures occasionally at Trinity College and with the IIPP. He is based in Leeson Analytic Centre.

Sean has a particular interest in how early childhood neglect and trauma come to influence and shape our adult experience. Sean has also investigated drug use and drug addiction within society and as a subjective human experience and continues to explore the function of drug addiction as a mechanism to avoid pain and as a substitute for meaningful human relationships across the adolescent and adult lifespan.

Other areas of interest include the experience of loneliness and social isolation, depression, anxiety, interpersonal struggle and the difficulties experienced by many adults in attempting to situate themselves meaningfully into the greater social fabric.
